Which vitamins and minerals can help support my immune system?

Vitamin D is considered an immune system modulator that reduces the expression of inflammatory cytokines and increases macrophage, a type of white blood cell, function.

Vitamin A is known as an anti-inflammation vitamin because of its critical role in enhancing immune function.

Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various parts of the immune system.

Selenium is an antioxidant that helps lower oxidative stress in your body which reduces inflammation and enhances immunity.

Zinc is a nutrient that helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses.

Are there additional nutraceuticals and botanicals that can support my immune system as well?

There are a host of botanicals that have been shown to help support our immune systems.

Quercetin has been shown to have antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Elderberry has widespread historical use as an anti-viral herb.  It appears to be most effective in the prevention of and early infection with respiratory viruses.

Both curcumin and resveratrol modulate inflammation and there is some indication that they may reduce viral replication.

Studies show that those who do not get enough sleep are more likely to get sick when exposed to a virus and will take longer to recover. Studies have also shown that sleep deprivation can result in a reduction of protective cytokines which are needed when we are under stress or have an infection.

How does eating sugar affect my immune system?

Sugar suppresses the immune system. Sugar intake affects your body’s ability to fight off viruses and bacterial infections. White blood cells, needed to fight off infections, are highly affected by sugar consumption.
